PV Sindhu, Sharath Kamal to be India’s flag bearers; Gagan Narang named Chef de Mission

Gagan Narang won bronze at the London Olympics in 2012.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Indian table tennis icon Sharath Kamal will be India’s flag bearers for the opening ceremony at Paris Olympics 2024. Additionally, 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist, Gagan Narang, has replaced the legendary boxer Mary Kom as India’s Chef-de-Mission. Narang won bronze in men’s 10m air rifle event and was one of India’s six medallist in London.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Dr PT Usha said in a release that Narang would be the fitting choice and his qualifications or experience make him a good choice for this leadership role. “Gagan’s promotion from Deputy Chef-de-Mission was an obvious decision once Mary Kom resigned. We needed someone with Olympic experience, and leadership qualities, and Gagan fits that profile perfectly,” she said.

At 41, Narang comes into the position with an immense treasure trove of experience from competing in four Olympic Games. His new role involves overlooking the Indian contingent for the Paris Games, starting July 26. His appointment is, therefore, seen as a strategic move towards ensuring that the best preparedness and morale, considering the competition, are accorded to India’s athletes.

Other than Narang’s new role, the IOA also confirmed that Sindhu, India’s most successful female Olympian with two medals, will be the female flag bearer for the opening ceremony. She would be joined as male flag bearer by table tennis veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal.

Dr. Usha did seem excited about these decisions: “PV Sindhu and A. Sharath Kamal are outstanding athletes who epitomize the spirit and fighting spirit of Indian sports. Their selection as flag bearers is a recognition of their hard work and pursuits.”

With Narang at the helm and the symbolic presence of Sindhu and Kamal, the IOA is confident that all things are in place as far as the Indian team’s preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics is concerned. The nation waits with bated breath to see its athletes excel on the world stage, bringing in glory and pride for the country.
